Canal Grande and Sant'Antonio Nuovo

The waterfront and the port extend into the city centre with the Canal Grande, dug in the mid-eighteenth century to allow the sailing ships to find a safe harbour and unload the goods directly into the warehouses. The canal ends before the neoclassical facade of the church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo. A city with solid cultural traditions, Trieste was included in the Grand Tour of the European men of letters when James Joyce wrote 'Ulysses'.
