Festa di Santa Rosalia

Overview

On 14-15 July, the cult of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of the city, is celebrated every year in Palermo, in memory of the miracle that saved the city from the terrible plague of 1624.

An unmissable event for every Palermo resident is the "festino" that attracts the curious from all over Italy and amazes travellers who find themselves caught up in the festivities, deliberately or by chance.

At the end of the commemoration, the procession that will accompany the triumphant Chariot along the Cassaro begins. The float is dominated by the figure of the Saint and has the shape of a dark-coloured boat, representing the ships of the “Turks” who brought the plague from North Africa. Having resumed its journey and crossed a large part of the old city centre, the vara returns to the Cathedral at midnight, to the screaming of the participants glorifying the Saint.
