A weekend dedicated to olive oil
A long-established feature of the Lake Garda area, the olive tree began to play a key role in the 7th century AD, as evidenced by an edict from 643 that imposed financial penalties on anyone caught damaging olive trees in the villages around Lake Garda.
As early as the Middle Ages, Garda olive oil was renowned for its superior quality and high economic value compared to oils from other regions, and it was used to excellent effect in both food and medicine. Its use in food was reserved for the few, as in the early Middle Ages, ‘4–6 kg of Garda olive oil was worth as much as a very large pig’.
During the Renaissance, on the other hand, human activity helped to shape the distinctive features of the agricultural landscape. During this period, the slopes began to be reshaped with elaborate layouts, which evolved into veritable terraced structures, so much so that, as early as 1968, the area was known as the 'Riviera degli Ulivi' ('Olive Grove Riviera').
The reputation of Garda olive oil has grown steadily; today, Garda PDO olive oil is one of the top 5 Italian PDO olive oils.
Garda olives grow in a fertile area nestled between lakes and mountains.
