Beyond the famous event that still takes place in Florence today, the Scoppio del Carro ("Explosion of the Cart") is a tradition that over time has also spread to neighbouring municipalities, such as Figline, Rufina and Panzano, a hamlet of Greve in Chianti.
In Figline, it was the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini sports club which, in 1979, brought the customs and atmosphere typical of the local tradition back to the town's main square.
The ceremony features a "Carro" (ceremonial cart) reproducing, on a reduced scale, the Palazzo Pretorio of Figline and takes place in Piazza Marsilio Ficino square on Easter Sunday.
A historical procession parades through the streets of the town centre, led by the Sbandieratori (flag throwers), and in recent years enhanced by the participation of performers representing the city's four gates in period costume, as well as by local institutional representatives.
The parade culminates with the solemn Easter Mass, celebrated at 11 a.m. in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, in which the flag throwers also take part.
At the end of the religious service, the traditional flight of the Colombina takes place, which sets off the fireworks of the ceremonial cart, followed by a performance by the flag throwers in the square.
