On Friday, 1 May, the Trofeo Marzocco returns to Piazza della Signoria, a national tournament featuring historical groups of flag throwers who perform to the accompaniment of ‘musici’ (musicians) to the rhythm of drums and bugles.
The event brings together groups from all over Italy, each with a strong historical and cultural significance.
Before the competition, the teams parade through the city streets, starting from the Palagio di Parte Guelfa.
The Bandierai degli Uffizi, with over 530 members, are Florence’s official ambassadors around the world and participate in every edition of the Trophy as a matter of course, as they are the custodians of the Florentine art of flag waving.
The Trophy is dedicated to the Marzocco, the historic lion that symbolises the popular power of Florence.
