Overview
2023 will be remembered as the year of Perugino (Pietro Vannucci – Città della Pieve 1446 - Fontignano, Perugia, 1523), the greatest exponent of Umbrian painting and great master of the Italian Renaissance.
From 4th March to 11th June 2023, in honour of the fifth centenary of his death, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia will host a major exhibition dedicated to Perugino, with over 70 works from around the world.
On display will be his greatest masterpieces, all predating 1505, the year he worked on three commissions that marked the high point of his career: the Chigi Altarpiece for the Chigi Chapel in Sant’Agostino in Siena, The Battle Between Love and Chastity in Mantua, now in the Louvre in Paris, and most notably the Marriage of the Virgin for the Chapel of the Holy Ring in Perugia Cathedral, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, France.
This surprising exhibition aims to restore to the painter the artistic prominence he garnered among the public in his day, retracing in the most complete way possible the fundamental steps of his career and his connection with the protagonists of that era.
