From 5 March 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Galleria Modernissimo in Bologna will host the exhibition Viva Varda! Cinema is a woman.
Curated by Florence Tissot, the exhibition celebrates the first female director to receive an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement.
The exhibition explores her legacy across cinema, art and political activism, forming a conceptual link with the simultaneous exhibition at Villa Medici in Rome.
Through films, photographs and installations, the project bears witness to a multifaceted body of work characterised by feminist activism and encounters with icons such as Mastroianni and Godard.
The sections delve into her visual style, her cinematic writing and her special bond with Italy, providing a comprehensive overview of an artist who masterfully documented the social transformations of the 20th century.
