The Calabrian Tarantella Festival in Saracena, in the province of Cosenza, is one of the most enjoyable opportunities to learn about and enjoy this traditional regional dance in good company.
The 11th edition of the Festa della Tarantella Calabrese will take place on 27 and 28 June 2026 and will offer two evenings of music, folklore, food and wine, and tradition.
The Festa della Tarantella Calabrese features pair dancing (man-woman, man-man or woman-woman) within a circle of people known as a 'ròta' (wheel), which includes the musicians. U mastru i ballu (the dance master) is at the service of the dancers and musicians and decides the order in which the members of the ròta may join the dance, taking turns. The steps of the Calabrian tarantella are based on triplets, with the arms assuming different positions for the man (courtship, challenge, fight, etc.) and for the woman (Greek jar, a symbol of fertility, on the hips, under the breasts).
Among the towns associated with the Calabrian tarantella, Saracena is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Calabria in the summer, offering entertainment, excursions to the Pollino National Park and tastings of delicious local products, such as the fine 'Slow Food' Moscato di Saracena wine.
