Van Dyck l'Europeo at the Ducal Palace of Genoa is an international exhibition that promises to be the largest monographic exhibition dedicated to Anthony Van Dyck in the last twenty-five years. More than 50 original paintings from 32 museums in 22 European cities tell the story of the Flemish master's work and genius through exceptional loans: from the Louvre in Paris to the Prado in Madrid, from the National Gallery in London to other prestigious European museums.
Set up in the rooms of the Doge's Apartment and in the evocative Doge's Chapel, the exhibition unfolds in an itinerary divided into several thematic sections. Engaging storytelling guides visitors on a journey to discover Van Dyck's artistic growth and the evolution of his style in the three cities that decisively shaped his career: Antwerp, Genoa and London.
The exhibition features two early self-portraits, refined portraits of noblewomen from Genoa, Antwerp and England, works linked to the prestigious patronage of King Charles I of England, as well as fascinating mythological subjects and intense sacred compositions. A collection of works that allows you to immerse yourself in the creative world of an artist capable of blending elegance, psychological introspection and extraordinary modernity.
To complete the story, the presence of three paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, Van Dyck's master, offers a valuable comparison between the two great protagonists of 17th-century Flemish painting, ideally recalling the success of the exhibition dedicated to Rubens hosted in Genoa in 2022. An artistic dialogue that reinforces the historical and cultural link between Genoa and the great European masters.
