Guernica. Genesis of a masterpiece against all wars

Overview

It was autumn 1953 when Italy hosted perhaps the most iconic work by Picasso, Guernica, in the Hall of Caryatids at the Palazzo Reale in Milan.

Seventy years after that exhibition, the MAN of Nuoro, in  Sardiniapays homage to the work which more current than ever, still today cries out against all war.

Even if the painting no longer leaves Spain or its place at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, its echo continues to reverberate across borders.

The Vollard Suite is considered the most important work in the history of 20th-century engraving. It has rarely been exhibited complete, but now will be for the first time in Italy at the MAN museum, thanks to the loan granted by the prestigious modern and contemporary art museum MNCARS, Reina Sofia Art Center Museum in Madrid.

The period of the Spanish civil war deeply shook the artist and, in some of the engravings that are part of the Vollard Suite, one can find very clear antecedents of what is considered Picasso's masterpiece: Guernica.

The Vollard Suite, exhibited complete for the first time in Italy at the MAN museum in Nuoro thanks to the collaboration of the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, acts as the leitmotif of the exhibition itinerary. Divided into two sections, it shows the genesis of the painting, through the photographs of Dora Maar, and the echo that the work had in Picasso’s artistic production.

The echo of the exhibition at the MAN seems to reverberate throughout the territory, also involving the weavers of Studio Pratha who created, with the natural colors of wool and the tenacious industriousness of the hands of Sardinian women, tapestries depicting details of the painting.
