Cantè J'Euv, or 'egg quest' is a Lenten custom that took place in peasant communities throughout southern Piedmont: Langhe, Roero, Monferrato, Alessandria and Acquese.
To welcome spring, on Lenten nights preceding Easter, small groups of young people would take to the hills at night and reach the farmyards of the most distant farmsteads; here they would begin singing a nursery rhyme in Piedmontese dialect under the windows of the landlords, waiting for them to wake up to ask for a gift of eggs.
Even to this day, the tradition remains alive and well, bringing different generations to rediscover the pleasure of setting out on spring evenings, and coming together.
On 1 April 2023, this collective celebration will take place in Montaldo Roero, a small village nestled between the unspoilt Rocche, a geological phenomenon of erosion that characterises the Roero like a small canyon. In the main square of the hamlet of San Rocco (Montaldo Roero), you will find refreshment points to enjoy delicious typical dishes and Roero and Roero Arneis DOCG wines from local producers.
The historical symbol of this festival are the traditional singing and music groups, who will be located in various corners of the village and liven up the evening with their black capes and wicker basket for collecting eggs.
