The Castle of Arquà Polesine

Overview

Historical intrigue and secret passages...

The best-preserved medieval building in all of the Polesine is surely theCastle of Arquà Polesine. Built in 1146, it consists of a crenellated tower on three floors and a building that opens onto a large courtyard with thirteen arches from the seventeenth century, stables and a grain store.

The castle stands in the centre of Arquà Polesine, a town in the province of Rovigo and until a few years ago, it was the seat of the municipal offices.

Still surrounded today by the ancient moat, the castle stands guard over the ancient linden tree in the inner courtyard, where you can also admire the Barchessa, a rural outbuilding used by farmers, where the kitchens were probably also once located.

On the main floor of the fortress you can admire the beautiful frescoes painted between the 16th and 17th centuries, dating from the same period as the hunting lodge, known today as Villa Pasqualini Canato. Don't miss the gardens, which are truly spectacular.

According to legend, the castle and the villa used to be connected by a secret passage. Exploring the area and visiting the castle and villas is a real treat for the imagination that will add real historic ambience to your trip.
