Overview
In the 20th-century post-war museography, Carlo Scarpa’s double intervention for the Museo Correr in Venice (in 1952-53 the rooms of Venetian History on the first floor; in 1959-60 the Picture Gallery on the second floor) stood out as an exemplary model of the elegant Italian line inspired by international Rationalism, where above all it is the perspicuous consideration of the architectural environmental context and above all the alea specific to each individual work that gives reason and value to the choices of architecture and applied design. The Museo Correr still bears witness to this high lesson; and even more so when the next interventions of reinstallation on the first floor and “restoration” of the Picture Gallery on the second floor are completed, each with the clear objective of the scholarly recovery of what is preserved; that is, some rooms and various individual elements on the first floor; almost the entire exhibition apparatus on the second floor.
The exhibition will present an effective restitution of the architecture and the Scarpian furnishings of the Correr through the period photographic images taken from the MUVE Photographic Archive. Along with them, some original examples of the refined design of Carlo Scarpa applied to the Correr will be exhibited: display cases and showcases, the famous “easel” for paintings, supports, joints and interlockings…; all demonstrating Scarpa’s extraordinary ability to combine form and function, with his unmistakable stylistic signature, in creations of high artisanal commitment; true “works” where the structural characteristics and the aesthetic qualities of the materials are enhanced to the maximum by a design of inimitable sensitivity and by the special qualities of the executor’s hand.
