In Foligno to experience the emotion of the Quintana Carousel

Overview

The Joust of the Quintana of Foligno is the revival of a chivalric tournament of the seventeenth century, which generally takes place in two annual events: the Challenge and the Revenge.

In 2023 the two chivalric competitions will take place on the following dates:

·       the Challenge on 16 and 17 June;

·       Revenge on 16 and 17 September.

In this tournament, ten knights, representing the wards of the city, compete in a ring carousel. The Knights, galloping, must travel a treacherous path, trying to insert with their spear a ring, progressively smaller, hanging on the arm of the sixteenth-century statue of the God Mars, symbol of the Quintana. The rider who finishes the course without penalty and in the shortest possible time wins the Palio.

The evening before the challenge, the Historical Parade of Quintana parades through the streets of the city with characters dressed in precious Baroque costumes: nobles, ladies, knights, valets, trumpeters, bishops and flag-wavers give the viewer a unique experience making Foligno go back through the centuries.

In the two weeks preceding the competitions, the city comes alive with the opening of the local taverns where you can taste, in a suggestive and lively atmosphere, the dishes of the Umbrian tradition, accompanied by local wines
