Gubbio’s 9th edition of the Medieval Festival

Overview

Set in the splendid city of Gubbio, in the province of Perugia, the 9th edition of the Medieval Festival will be held from 20 to 24 September 2023, attracting Italian and international medievalists, writers, scientists and art historians.

'East – West. The moving frontiers of history' will be the theme of the festival. A five-day journey along the shifting frontier between different civilisations that periodically come into contact through trade and faith routes: war and peace, schisms and discoveries, contagions and traditions, places and characters.

The icon of the 2023 edition of the Festival will be the figure of two-faced Janus: the mysterious god of the Italic and Roman religion, guardian of every passage and change, with his gaze turned towards time and history. A gaze in which past and future intertwine, from late antiquity to the more recent geopolitics of the 21st century.

The Medieval Book Fair will provide the backdrop for exhibitions, theatrical events, medieval music, guided tours and many other activities that make up the rich programme. The festival is sponsored by the Municipality of Gubbio with the Santissima Maria Assunta University (Lumsa) and the Giuseppe Mazzatinti Foundation as partners from the education sector.

An event that cannot be missed to get to know, understand and experience this wonderful and fruitful period of our history.
