The Mercato delle Gaite in Bevagna

Overview

From 14 to 25 June, the Mercato delle Gaite is held in Bevagna. This medieval re-enactment reconstructs the daily life of the inhabitants of the village between 1250 and 1350.

During this period, the ancient medieval craft workshops reopen their doors and the streets are filled with residents of Bevagna in period costume, who reenact the daily lives of their ancestors, eating, working, and playing just as they did.

The small village will also be brought to life by shows performed by jesters and jugglers.

The four historic districts of the city, called ‘"guaite" or "gaite", compete in four competitions: archery, crafts, gastronomy and the medieval market.

Points are awarded based on a complex system by scholars and experts from various fields, who are called upon to judge the historical relevance of the reconstructions. On the last day of the event, the winner is declared and is awarded the Palio of Victory.

In the four taverns where the gastronomic competition is staged, you can also try excellent dishes to rediscover the flavours of times gone by.
