San Giorgio di Valpolicella

Overview

San Giorgio is a small fraction of the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella and the position on which it stands has earned it a particular nickname: It develops on a hill, amidst vineyards and olive groves, from which there is a splendid panorama, but which can only be reached after a long and arduous walk, despite the fact that it seems very close from below... and this is why the locals call it 'Ingannapoltron'. The heart of the village is the Longobard-Romanesque parish church, one of the oldest churches in the Verona area, and all around it there is the village, with its stone houses, an ideal setting for historical re-enactments such as the traditional 'Festa delle Fae'. Finally, not to be missed are the local products, including oil and wine, especially Valpolicella, which takes its name from the village, but also Recioto and Amarone.
