Overview
Chianni is a medieval village of Etruscan origin surrounded by hills and oak woods, the scene of battles between Volterra and Pisa before coming under the rule of Florence. The church of S. Donato, dating back to 1277 and remodelled in the 19th century, has a polychrome marble altar from the late 17th century. In the basement of the church, the Chapel of the SS. Annunziata, or Church of the Company of the SS. Annunziata, probably dating back to the 18th century, is admirable for its cycle of frescoes attributed to Giovanni Battista Tempesti of Volterra. Finally, in the hamlet of Rivalto, one can appreciate the suggestive sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine surrounded by woods and beautiful panoramic views.
