The Italian leg of the Wanda Diamond League, scheduled for Friday 2nd June 2023, will be held at the “Luigi Ridolfi” stadium, which successfully hosted the event in 2021.
Florence will therefore host the 2023 edition of the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, the third stage of the top international circuit after Doha (5th May) and Rabat (28th May) and the first in Europe.
It will be a star-studded evening, with the world’s top athletes and Italian champions looking to qualify for the final in Eugene (16th-17th September).
The Golden Gala is Italy’s most renowned international athletics tournament and among the most eagerly awaited sporting events.
The Golden Gala was launched in 1980 by Primo Nebiolo, then president of the FIDAL, who realised that, in the year that many countries boycotted the Moscow Olympics, Rome could become the scene of spectacular tournaments and give those who had been left out of the Games a second chance to compete. That night saw Italian athletes Pietro Mennea and Sara Simeoni claim victory in front of a 60,000-strong crowd filling the Olympic Stadium.
The programme of this Florence event includes fifteen disciplines, with eight women’s events and seven men’s events.
The men’s 100 metres and men’s high jump are particularly popular.
