20th Century Masters on display in Centuripe

Overview

Until 8 January 2023, the Antiquarium in Centuripe is hosting an exhibition of works from the collection of its bold patron Alberto Della Ragione

Born out of the collaboration between the Municipality of Centuripe and the Museo Novecento in Florence, the exhibition, curated by Sergio Risaliti, presents one of the largest collections of 20th-century Italian art, donated by the engineer Alberto Della Ragione to the Municipality of Florence in 1970, in the aftermath of the violent flood that hit the city in 1966.

The rich selection of works, ranging from Renato Guttuso to Emilio Vedova, from Mario Mafai to Filippo de Pisis, follows the collector’s story. Initially wary of contemporary artworks, Della Ragione started by buying 19th-century art. He then offered his support to young artists, often neglected by the market and official critics, expanding his collection with pieces ranging from metaphysical painting and avant-garde movements to 20th-century Italian works – from Second Futurism to Magic Realism. Also of great importance are the works of the masters of the Rome School and Corrente, with whom Della Ragione established not only professional relationships, but also genuine bonds of friendship.

Following its patron’s wishes, the collection crosses regional borders on a journey to Sicily, arriving in Centuripe, a town with a rich history and home to important artistic and archaeological treasures, called “The Balcony of Sicily” for the boundless views offered by its panoramas. We recommend combining a guided tour of the exhibition and a tour of the town.
