Now in its 582nd edition, it remains a captivating event and one of the city’s most cherished celebrations.
The ancient ritual has been repeated since 1445, when the then Bishop of Cervia, Pietro Barbo, on the day of Ascension, while returning from an embassy to Venice, was caught in a storm, which he calmed by throwing his ring into the water.
The Archbishop of the Diocese of Ravenna and Cervia sets out to sea on a fishing boat, blesses the Adriatic Sea and offers the waters a gold ring, thereby continuing the vow made in 1445.
Even today, Cervia still relives the atmosphere and preserves the traditions associated with this ritual.
From Cervia’s main square, Piazza Garibaldi, a historical procession forms, in which lords, standard bearers, ladies and magistrates, dressed in sumptuous period costumes, parade, accompanying the ring that will be thrown into the sea during the historic ceremony of the ‘marriage of the city to the waters of the Adriatic’.
