Maritime Monteverdi

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

Within the Val di Cecina and the geothermal area, Monteverdi Marittimo, due to its proximity to the sea, is defined as the gateway between the sea and geothermal energy.

Two important religious buildings enrich the historic centre, typical and refined: the church of Sant'Andrea with its stone façade and the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, which houses the Black Christ, a wooden crucifix of the 14th-15th century. Also worth a visit are the Museum of Landscapes and the ruins of the Badia di San Pietro in Palazzolo. A few km from the capital, the hamlet of Canneto is a place where time seems to have stood still, an ancient castle inside which stands out the parish church of San Lorenzo, known as early as 1521. The area can be discovered calmly thanks to a dense network of bike and trekking paths (about 400 km in total) that also pass within the Monterufoli and Caselli Nature Reserve.

Genuine and natural flavours reign at the table, such as the Tenuta di Canneto IGT wine, the olive oil of Podere Sassolivo, and the goat cheeses of the Azienda Agricola Le Ginestre. A typical dish is the soup with Monteverdina shallots, with beans, vegetables and stale bread. Events include the Maggerini festival (1 May), the Festival of Florentine steak and the Theatre Festival of the Geothermal Hills in the summer months.
