Overview
Isolated, at an altitude of over 800 metres and immersed in a dense fir forest, the Convent of Montesenario was erected in 1234 by seven Florentine nobles, founders of the Order of the Servants of Mary, and modified several times in the 15th and 19th centuries. The complex includes the large hospice dating from 1603, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, dating from 1412 and renovated in the 18th century, which preserves the Chapel of the Apparition inside, and the convent, with a 15th-century cloister. Outside, there are caves carved into the rock by the founding saints. The monks produce several liqueurs, including the delicious Gemma d'abeto, to be enjoyed at the bar-restaurant.
