The Ciclovia della Bassa Parmense (Lower Parma Cycle Path) is a cycle tourism route that links Parma with Busseto. Also known as the Food Valley Bike, it covers the splendid territory from the ducal city, also defined as the Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy, to the places much loved by Giuseppe Verdi, travelling through and rediscovering anarea rich in culture, nature, traditions and gastronomy.

Suitable for cyclists of all ages, the route runs for about 70 km on a flat route that skirts the majestic Po River several times.

The Food Valley Bike App, a handy digital guide, provides all useful information on the route and the two themes that make up the itinerary: the Pasta Route and the Salumi Route.

Parma-Colorno

Parma-Colorno

Our itinerary begins in Parma, an ideal destination for lovers of culture and good food. The cycle path, near the Barilla factory, takes us through the territory of Parmigiano Reggiano, anolini, the zucchella plum of Lentigione, the tomato of Sorbolo, to Colorno. We travelled 40 km enchanted by the beauty of the area and its delicacies: the Pastasciutta cycle path (from Parma to Sorbolo, about 18 km), the Zucchella plum cycle path (from Sorbolo to Coenzo, about 8 km), the Anolino cycle path (from Sorbolo to Mezzani sul Po, about 14 km) and the Tortel Dòls cycle path (about 11 km to Colorno).

Certainly worth a visit is the beautiful village of Brescello, which can be reached by making a small diversion to the Mezzani area.

Colorno welcomes us with its beautiful Royal Palace and, to stay on the subject of good food, it refreshes us with its 'tortel dòls'.

Colorno-Roccabianca

Colorno-Roccabianca

Let's take the time to visit 'little Versaille', the beautiful palace of Colorno with its delightful park, before resuming our journey.

In Colorno, the Spalla Cruda di Palasone cycle route begins (about 14 km), which we will follow as far as Sissa Trecasali and then continue along the Ciccioli cycle path, about 5 km long, leading to Roccabianca. Here, we cannot miss a visit to the Castle, built by Pier Maria Rossi in honour of his beloved Bianca Pellegrini, after whom it is named.

Along this itinerary in the 'Bassa Parmense' (Lower Parma), skirting the great river Po at times, we are reminded of the stories of Giovannino Guareschi's Mondo Piccolo and above all, the humorous but true events of Don Camillo and Peppone.

Roccabianca-Busseto

Roccabianca-Busseto

The last stage of our route starts from Roccabianca along the Culatello cycle path, which in about 10 km takes us to Polesine Zibello, the kingdom of delicious Culatello! The village is certainly worth a stop to savour this magnificent product and visit the museum dedicated to it.

From Polesine Zibello we resume our journey along the Spongata cycle path to arrive, after about 6 km, at Busseto, the destination of our beautiful route and treasure trove of the life of Maestro Giuseppe Verdi.

Our itinerary draws to a close. Through a few stages, we got to know the beauty of this territory and the uniqueness of its products. Now it is time to set off on the return journey, perhaps going back along the route or taking advantage of the train from Busseto to Parma.

Whatever our choice, we return home with the certainty of having experienced unforgettable moments, through the places and gastronomic traditions of a wonderful corner of our Bel Paese!
