Cycling in the heart of Valli di Comacchio in search of memorable natural landscapes. The itinerary lasts only one day but you will remember it for a lifetime!

From the Sacca di Goro and the age-old Abbey of Pomposa to the beaches of Ferrara, throughoases and nature reserves, to reach the town of the infamous Trepponti.

Goro

Goro

The starting point is the Sacca di Goro, one of the largest brackish lagoons in the Upper Adriatic, where you can see the unique ecological features of an ecosystem where important plant and animal communities coexist in a delicate balance.

But that's not all: abandoning your bike for a moment, you can indulge in a motorboat trip to discover the Po Delta.

Mesola

Mesola

Returning by bike, the second stop is at the Bosco della Mesola Nature Reserve.

The woodlands are what remain of a vast thermophilic forest, one of the last and best preserved remnants of lowland forest, a memory of the ancient forests that were found along the Adriatic coast until a few centuries ago.

Here it is not uncommon to spot different varities of deer.

Pomposa

Pomposa

Pomposa Abbey is the next destination. Dating back to the 9th century, it is a cornerstone in the artistic history of the Po Valley in the Middle Ages. Originally surrounded by the waters of the Po and the sea, it is now a treasure trove of frescoes by the Giotto school and mosaic floors.

Here, moreover, the Benedictine monk Guido d 'Arezzo developed modern musical notation, giving names to the notes. In short, we are in the place where musical notation was conceived as we know it today.

Lido di Volano

Lido di Volano

Continuing on the road to Comacchio, you must also make a stop at the Canneviè Oasis, a true paradise for naturalists and birdwatchers, thanks to the numerous observation points to discover and observe the native bird species.

Next comes the Po di Volano river mouth: here a cycle path leads into the Scannone di Volano, a strip of land a couple of kilometres long, covered with maritime pines and holm oaks, where you can enjoy a unique view of the coastline.

The time has

not yet come to feel tired because the destination is close, although it does not mean that you can't have a well-deserved stop along the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori in Ferrara, to taste one of the recipes that have become part of the Italian culinary heritage.

Gazing over the alternating fields of crops, rice fields and watercourses, brackish valleys and stately homes from the Este period, it is easy to come across wineries and farms, as well as taverns, restaurants and shops that offer the food and wine specialities of the area, prepared with high quality, 0km ingredients.

Pumpkin cappellacci, pasticcio ferrarese and a thousand and more eel-based dishes are just a few examples: recharge your batteries because soon you'll be back on the bike!

Comacchio

Comacchio

This off-road bike trail is coming to a close: Comacchio and its wonders are drawing near!

Here are some tips to feel the atmosphere of what is known as Little Venice:

  • A visit to the Manifattura dei Marinati, a cultural and food and wine site, as well as a visit to the Po Delta Park. You can see the entire processing cycle of anchovies, aquadelles and eels, the culinary icon of Comacchio.
  • A walk to the unmistakable Trepponti Bridge which, with its imposing staircases, is one of the undisputed symbols of the city.
  • A visit to the Comacchio Salt Pans, a particularly delicate protected area of the Po Delta Park. The productive activity stopped 30 years ago and the environment has become an ecosystem populated by numerous species of birds, some even nesting and rare.

Get your legs and cameras ready: the Goro - Comacchio route awaits you!
