Sport as a lens to tell the story of Italy's evolution, from the 20th century to the present, in dialogue with the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics
From 23 January to 15 March 2026 Oltre i limiti. SportItalia. A choral portrait of a changing country: a project that, through the sporting participation of Italians, recounts the great social, cultural and economic changes of the 20th century and the transformations that continue in the present.
The exhibition is conceived and produced by M9 - Museo del '900 on the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with the Italian Society of Sports History, the Italian Touring Club, Home Movies - National Archive of Family Films, Istituto Luce and ANSA Archive. On the occasion of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, and as part of the Cultural Olympiad, M9 is also bringing this story to Mestre, after a journey that has already touched representative offices and Italian Cultural Institutes.
The itinerary intertwines memory and future through six thematic, independent and connected nuclei: Novecento, where the spread of sport accompanies the transition from rural to post-industrial Italy, between well-being, city and free time; Donne!, which follows the entry of women into public space and sport, between obstacles, stereotypes and new challenges of inclusion; Viaggi, which tells of mobility, Italian communities abroad and sport as a terrain of relationship; In Corpore Sano, which focuses on the public role of sport, between education, health and welfare; Superumani, where technology and medicine redesign protection, performance and the very idea of limit; Amore, an affective journey into cheerleading and collective rites, from curves to "sports bars", from myths to popular habits.
