Gulf of Follonica

Overview

A crescent containing precious treasures of Tuscany

A Tuscan jewel that captivates tourists. The Gulf of Follonica is a wide inlet in Alta Maremma, between the provinces of Grosseto and Livorno, enclosed between Piombino and Punta Ala. It includes popular tourist destinations such as Follonica, Scarlino, Castiglione della Pescaia, Massa Marittima and Gavorrano. Here, amid fragrant pine forests and beautiful beaches with fine, light sand, you can dive into the crystal clear, turquoise sea, awarded with theBlue Flag.

The most beautiful beaches, aside from Follonica, include Cala Violina, a gem with white sand, surrounded by a lush pine forest. It gets its name from the fact that the sand makes a sound like a violin when trodden on. In the Sterpaia Nature Park, on the other hand, you'll find the Carbonifera beach with fine sand dunes and an age-old pine forest. Other beaches not to miss are Cava Civette and Cala Martina.

The Gulf of Follonica is an ideal destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, thanks to the constant winds that blow along the coast. The mineral-rich hills of this area enable the numerous winemakers to produce excellent wines. There is also an abundance of charming locations here, including Massa Marittima, considered one of the most beautiful towns in Maremma.
