Santerno Valley

Overview

Travelling along the Via Montanara, which climbs from Imola towards the Tuscan Apennines, you will come across the Santerno Valley, a land of ancient traditions and unspoilt nature.

There are many attractions and activities that can be carried out in this region. An absolute must is La Casa del Fiume Visitor Centre in Borgo Tossignano: this is the visitor centre on the Bologna side of the Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola. Here you can stop for a break at the refreshment point, which offers the opportunity to have a typical lunch, or go to the picnic areas. Young visitors can play in the themed play areas, learn about the fauna that inhabits the park and try their hand at orienteering.

Tossignano is a small village that offers an enchanting view of the Riva di San Biagio and is the gateway to the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park, a precious ecosystem that preserves a vast flora and fauna typical of the Apennines.

Continuing along the valley, you will come across Castel del Rio, a mountain village that preserves traces of its glorious past. Built in the sixteenth century, Palazzo Alidosi is the heart of the town, now the town hall, and houses the library, the War and Gothic Line Museum, the Chestnut Museum and the animal tower environmental education centre.

Finally, heading towards the Tuscan border, you can admire the Moraduccio Falls and, from here, a short trek can be taken to the abandoned village of Castiglioncello.
