Feniglia

Overview

A strip of sand in a nature reserve

La Feniglia, an essential stop for all those who want to explore the municipality of Orbetello, is a wonderful strip of sand, known as Tombolo, which connects the Ansedonia hill to the east and Monte Argentario to the west, joining it to the mainland.

It stretches for about 6 kilometres and is characterised by an expanse of fine white sand, with a very shallow seabed, ideal for children and families with four-legged friends.

This beautiful beach is part of the Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve, a protected area shaded by maritime pines where you can take a relaxing stroll to catch a glimpse of fallow deer, wild boar, foxes, badgers, and white and grey herons, which live here in peace. Open all year round, you can also see it by bike. The beach is essentially free, but it also has some bathing establishments with all the essential services.

La Feniglia is an ideal destination for those seeking a break from the usual beach life and who want to immerse themselves in nature, but remain sheltered from the winds, thanks to its southern exposure. Here, you can also admire a memorial stone dedicated to the painter Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, who in 1610, while escaping trouble with the law, took refuge in the marshes of this area and contracted malaria.
