Overview
Sansepolcro is a small, precious and historically important land of Tuscany, a crossroads between its Region, Umbria, Marche and Emilia-Romagna, today the main center of the Valtiberina, where the first stretch of the Tiber River valley extends. Also known as Borgo Sansepolcro, its territory is delimited by the hilly chain of the pre-Apennines, to the west, by the Alpe di Catenaia, to the north-west, and by the Alpe della Luna, to the north-east. Three important passes connect the valley floor with the nearby Adriatic area: Viamaggio, towards Rimini, Bocca Trabaria, towards Urbino, and Bocca Serriola, towards Fano.
In this land, beauty generously offers itself to the visitor at every glimpse of the landscape, hilly and mountainous, that forms its backdrop; in it art and history ooze from everywhere, starting from the Civic Museum, which houses four masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, including the Resurrection and the Polyptych of Mercy, up to the narrowest streets of the Historic Center, full of Renaissance Palaces and ancient Churches, which house extraordinary masterpieces, such as the Church of S. Lorenzo, with the Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino.
For centuries, every September, the "Borgo" has hosted the traditional Palio della Balestra, a famous shooting competition with the ancient Italian crossbow, a unique show, which brings with it all those emotions and that healthy competitive spirit that over the years have contributed to the birth of one of the most solid and varied sports movements in Central Italy. It is no coincidence that in 2021 Sansepolcro obtained the recognition of European Municipality of Sport, "European Town of Sport", thanks above all to the collaboration of the numerous local associations that contribute to the diffusion of sport as a practice of well-being and health.
The Municipality has always been linked to the figure of Saint Francis, whom it hosted several times, on the occasion of his passages to and from the hermitage of La Verna. In the hills of the "Borgo", the Saint founded the hermitage of Montecasale, a simple but very suggestive stone construction, where the Capuchin minor friars settled, who still reside there today. For some years, the Festival dei Cammini di Francesco has been organized, a review of shows, art, music and thematic conferences dedicated to those who follow in the footsteps of Francis for spiritual, religious but also naturalistic, cultural or sporting reasons.
The City is equipped with tourist facilities, both modern and traditional, and Agritourism, as well as areas equipped for caravans, to allow a welcoming stay suitable for all needs. Thanks to its strategic geographical position, it is the ideal starting point for interesting excursions among the hills that border Lake Montedoglio and the plain of the Tiber River, and for walks along the mountains that lead to the Alpe della Luna.
