Overview
A welcoming place for meditative stays, the monastery stands in an isolated location surrounded by a green forest. The complex is said to have been founded in 1192 by Camaldolese monks with a hospital and hospice attached. It was then given to St Francis in 1213 who stayed here for a period and used to stop here on his way between Assisi and La Verna. In the original stone church is a polychrome statue of the Madonna and Child, which was reportedly recovered from the ruins of the castle.
