Castello di San Michele

Overview

An ancient fortress in Trentino

Where Val di Sole meets Val di Peio stands Castel San Michele, also known as Castello di Ossana, named after the local village.

From Trento, you can take the train to Mezzana in two hours, and from there travel by bus to Ossana. At the station, you can also board a shuttle bus that will take you to your destination in a couple of hours. For visitors travelling by car from Trento, the journey will take just over an hour. You can also reach the castle by bike, following the Val di Sole cycle path in the section between Ossana and Mezzana.

Castel San Michele, one of the most significant and oldest fortresses in the Val di Sole, was built on top of a rocky spur, over the drawbridge and past the first city wall. From the top of the imposing, 25-metre-high tower, you can enjoy unique views over the entire valley. You can also see what remains of the old St Michael’s Church, the original core of the fortress.

At Christmas, the ancient walls host an exhibition of unique historical nativity scenes set during the time of the Great War. Activities for children are organised every Thursday, including guided tours, treasure hunts, themed games, workshops and snacks. In the evening, it is the adults’ turn, with aperitifs and entertainment.
