The Resians are thought to have settled in the valley between 625 and 631 AD. From the late Middle Ages and throughout the Modern Era, the valley was mainly dependent on the Benedictine Abbey of San Gallo in Moggio Udinese.
During the period of the Patria del Friuli, administrative and political-religious unity was governed by the Patriarchs of Aquileia. Thereafter, the fiefdom was led by a commendatory abbot.
This was followed by brief periods of Habsburg monarchy, the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy (during which, in 1805, the current municipality of Resia was established by merging the previous four municipalities) and the Austrian Empire. Like Friuli, Resia was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
In the hamlets of Stolvizza, Coritis and Uccea, you can admire the typical architecture of Resian houses, which are distinguished by their relatively simple layout (rectangular with two rooms), a structure composed of thick stone walls and a wooden gabled roof. The first floor is reached by an external staircase, while the second floor, which was used as a barn, is accessed by wooden stairs.
The Museum of the People of Val Resia is located in a typical old house in Stolvizza, with a section dedicated to the tradition of fairy tales. The museums in Stolvizza also include the Museo dell'Arrotino (Knife Grinder Museum), where you can view tools and photographs relating to this ancient craft.
The "planine" are also of architectural interest. These are rural buildings located in the hills where people would stay with their livestock during the summer. Last but not least, the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in the capital city of Prato, first mentioned in records dating back to 1098, was consecrated in its current style in 1718 and became a sanctuary in 2019.
Val Resia is a glacial basin lying in the north-eastern part of Friuli Venezia Giulia on the border with Slovenia. It is crossed by the river of the same name and surrounded by towering peaks, the highest of which is Mount Canin (2,587 metres). Val Resia and Valle di Uccea form the municipality of Resia, with a total area of 119 km².
The municipal capital is Prato/Ravanza, home to the Julian Prealps Park visitor centre and the Rozajanska kulturska hiša cultural centre, dedicated to promoting the music, dance and traditional customs of Resian culture.Along with the hamlets of S. Giorgio/Bila, Gniva/Njïwa, Lischiazze/Lišćaza and Gost/Ta-na Huzdë, Oseacco/Osoanë, Stolvizza/Solbiza, Coritis/Korïto and Uccea/Učja, the total population amounts to 1,000 inhabitants. The Sella Carnizza Pass provides a magnificent view of the stavoli, some of which have been converted into restaurants.
The area is primarily covered by forests of black pine, Scots pine, and beech. Much of the area is located within the Julian Prealps Nature Park.
