The museum is located inside the former convent annexed to the Basilica of San Vitale, near the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.
Where to admire Ravenna's historical wealth
In the museum's halls, visitors can explore the historical development of Ravenna through archaeological finds and important artistic masterpieces. On display are exquisite floor mosaics from lost churches and palaces, as well as an extraordinary sinopia removed from the apse of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe.
The exhibits also include a complete cycle of detached 14th-century frescoes by Pietro da Rimini, a fine example of 14th-century painting, as well as rare Byzantine textiles, paintings, sculptures, ivories, terracotta pieces, weapons and coins. There is even an ancient pharmacy.
Treasures from lost places and contemporary art
Of particular importance are the marble furnishings and the floor mosaic from the now-vanished Church of San Michele in Africisco (6th century), as well as a sinopia – a preparatory wall painting in red ochre – removed from the apse of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe in the 1970s.
One section of the exhibition is dedicated to contemporary mosaic, featuring works donated by renowned artists including Felice Nittolo, Marco De Luca, CaCO3 and Sara Vasini.
