Sarre Royal Castle

Overview

The royal castle of Sarre, one of the most recognisable symbols of the Aosta Valley, overlooks the Aosta plain from the top of a hill. The central body of the structure is decorated in a modest and harmonious manner, surmounted in the centre by a large square tower. All around are the steep agricultural terraces typical of this part of the Alps, often planted with vines, but just as often occupied by orchards producing excellent apples and other produce.

The castle had already existed since the 12th-13th centuries when, in 1869, the king of united Italy Victor Emmanuel II bought his property, adding the adjective royal to the monument.

In Sarre, the reigning dynasty of the Savoy family came to spend pleasant holiday periods and, above all, to pursue the noble art of hunting. In memory of the strong tradition that links Sarre to hunting activity, the Piedmontese kings had what is today the most striking room in the castle's interior furnished: a large hall on whose walls dozens of hunting trophies stand out. The entire castle is tastefully furnished: visitors can admire portraits, heirlooms, photographs and objects of all kinds that belonged to the House of Savoy.
