Overview
In 1937, the distinguished botanist Achille Forti bequeathed the building to the Municipality of Verona with the condition that it be used as a modern art museum. However, due to the war, the palace was first used as the headquarters of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Artistic High School, and later as offices of the municipal administration until around 1950.
Later, in 1966, some restoration works were undertaken, followed by a brief reopening of the museum. The situation remained largely unchanged until the 1980s, when in 1982 the municipal administration decided on the permanent opening of the gallery, which was inaugurated on March 14 of the same year.
Since then, the museum has hosted numerous important exhibitions featuring leading figures and movements from the national and international art scene. Its collection includes over 1,300 modern and contemporary works, ranging from Medardo Rosso to Vanessa Beecroft, from Francesco Hayez to Fabrizio Plessi, from Felice Casorati to Giulio Paolini, and many others.
