Pietralunga

Overview

In the heart of an area rich in greenery, amidst woods and hills, lies the small village of Pietralunga: its appearance is already a story of its ancient medieval roots, which can be glimpsed from the walls that enclose the centre, from the characteristic "vigoli" and the remains of the Longobard Fortress, an ancient fortification built around the 8th century. Remaining in the village, a must-see is the parish church of Santa Maria, with its elegant Romanesque portal and its fresco attributed to Raffaellino del Colle depicting the 'Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian'. But Pietralunga's beauty does not stop at the town's borders: its territory is criss-crossed by various stretches of Roman roads and, for those looking for a place where they can let themselves be lulled by nature and its colours, the ideal destination is the Oasi del Candeleto, a green island that also offers the interesting Ornithological-Naturalistic Museum, where an important ornithological collection is preserved.
