Rome of the Republic. The story of archaeology

Overview

From January  13th to the 24th of September 2023 Rome of the Republic goes on display, in Palazzo Caffarelli.

The second chapter (after the exhibition The Rome of Kings, 2018) of the great cycle "The story of Archaeology", based mainly on the collections owned by the municipality conserved in the warehouses and museums of the Superintendence.

About 1,800 exhibits, mostly shown for the first time, tell us about republican Rome, from the beginning of the 5th to the middle of the 1st century: the characteristics and transformations of Roman society over the course of five centuries, from the birth of the Republic to the creation of the Empire.

The project, curated by Isabella Damiani and Claudio Parisi Presicce and promoted by Roma Culture, the Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage, with the organization Zètema Progetto Cultura, is part of a multi-year project, a historical excursus on the basis of archaeological discoveries.

An exhibition itinerary that, through the analysis of the founding aspects of Roman civilization (construction, decorative techniques and phases, water supply, production, trade and self-celebration) allows us to grasp the deepest essence of a people seen as a beacon of civilization for the world.
