National Unity and Armed Forces Day

Overview

On 4 November, Italy’s National Unity and Armed Forces Day is commemorated in Rome.

The ceremony starts at 8 am with the arrival of the “Train of Remembrance” at platform 1 of Termini station. Rome is the last stop on the continuation of the journey of the special convoy that in 1921 transported the body of the Unknown Soldier, chosen by Maria Bergamas from among 11 unidentified Italian soldiers, from Aquilea to the capital. The train is met by Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, and Head of the National Railways, Dr Luigi Ferraris.

At 9 am, the ceremony moves to the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia, where the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by the highest officers of State, the Minister of Defence and leading military figures, will lay a laurel wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The event continues with a highly anticipated display by the Frecce Tricolori flying over the skies of Rome, creating impressive shapes. This display team of ten aircraft fill the skies above Rome with green, white and red smoke.
