There are more than 1500 lakes along the Italian peninsula and many can be navigated. The largest, known to be a true paradise for yachtsmen, is Lake Garda, on which the Rotta delle Centomiglia (Hundred Miles Route) winds its way, touching all the shores and the most charming villages overlooking the water. It is inspired by the famous lake sailing regatta known as the Centomiglia. But the miles in this case are 120. Watch out for Peler and Ora, the two winds that blow in the morning from the north and in the evening from the south, respectively.

Day 1

Sirmione built on water

Sirmione built on water

The journey starts from Desenzano, the southernmost town on Lake Garda. It is dominated by a castle and offers picturesque views that you can enjoy especially from the fish market. The bow is pointing north-east and after about six miles you will reach Sirmione, stretched out on the water. Visit the fascinating Scaliger castle, thermal baths and Catullus' caves.

Lazise, the charming

Lazise, the charming

Set off from Sirmione and sail 7 miles to the enchanting port of Lazise. Stroll through the historic centre exploring the Scaliger castle, the church of Saints Zeno and Martin and the Romanesque parish church of San Nicolò. Take advantage of this to stock up on extra virgin olive oil, rosé wine and Monte Veronese cheese.

Day 2

Gardone Riviera and D'Annunzio's Vittoriale

From Lazise, head north-west again towards Gardone Riviera about 15 miles away. Enjoy sailing in the Gulf of Salò and go ashore to visit the Vittoriale, the bizarre residence of Gabriele D'Annunzio.

Day 3

Malcesine in the shadow of a castle

Malcesine in the shadow of a castle

From Gardone turn north-east for about 10 miles back towards Torri del Benaco, on the Veneto shore. It is a village still full of medieval towers. From here you head straight north to Malcesine. It is 15 miles that can easily be covered in the morning with the wind on the bow. Land at the Fraglia della Vela and stroll through the village in the shadow of a Scaliger castle and Mount Baldo.

Day 4

Limone sul Garda, a favourite with Goethe

Limone sul Garda, a favourite with Goethe

When the German intellectual and man of letters Johann Wolfgang von Goethe passed through these parts, on one of the first stages of his Italian Journey, he was struck by the Mediterranean climate and landscapes of the area, and fell in love with Limone del Garda, where the air truly smells of citrus fruits.

Riva del Garda, at the lake's northern end

Riva del Garda, at the lake's northern end

You now set sail towards Torbole, a village of fishermen and truffle hunters. This corner of the lake is very windy and popular with windsurfers. A little further on you'll see Riva del Garda, the northernmost town on the lake, dominated by a fortress. Once ashore, you can take a pleasant stroll around the beautiful village square and discover the Church of the Virgin.
