Overview
It was founded in the 5th century on an ancient tomb and later rebuilt in the 16th century. Beyond the gabled façade of the church is the interior of the complex, with a single rectangular nave with round arches and ribbed vaults supported by pillars, where interesting frescoes survive, including a 10th-century Redeemer. More recent are the frescoes of the vault and the two side bezels. Of particular interest is the marble trapdoor in the centre of the church presbytery that bears the inscription "Puteus Antonini Martiris"; in the past, this was considered the burial place of St. Antoninus, the patron saint of Piacenza and a martyr who was beheaded in 313 A.D., which was presumably found in a slightly adjacent hypogeum.
