On Sunday 1 March, Monghidoro will once again host the Pig Festival (Festa del Maiale), a historic event in the Bolognese Apennines, now in its twentieth edition. An entire day is dedicated to mountain gastronomic culture, celebrating authentic flavours and rituals that reflect the life of local communities.
The protagonists of the event are the norcini – master pork butchers and guardians of an ancient tradition rooted in rural life. In the past, butchering the pig was a true communal occasion: families and neighbours would gather at dawn to prepare the meat and create valuable provisions for the winter months. Each part was put to good use thanks to knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Today, that memory lives on in the form of food stalls, regional specialities, artisanal cured meats and local produce, prepared according to mountain traditions.
Throughout the day, the village centre comes alive with a market, exhibitors and stands dedicated to food, wine and local crafts. The streets of the historic village become a meeting place where visitors can sample products, make purchases and meet producers in person. Alongside the gastronomic offerings, there's no shortage of entertainment and activities designed to engage visitors of all ages.
The event is free to attend and takes place in the historic centre of Monghidoro. The Pig Festival is an invitation to rediscover the value of conviviality and mountain traditions, in a region that proudly preserves its identity and gastronomic heritage.
