Champoluc

Overview

In the heart of the Ayas Valley

A mountain beauty at the foot of Monte Rosa. Champoluc sits in the Ayas Valley in the Aosta Valley, at an altitude of 1,568 metres. In the distance, glaciers border the valley. It is the ideal starting point for climbing the surrounding peaks, offering beautiful views and year-round activities, from skiing to trekking.

An important transit route since ancient times, when merchants passed through on their way to the Valais, in the 1800s Champoluc became a popular mountaineering destination. It is the starting point of one of the most stunning itineraries of Monterosa Ski, which crosses several valleys to reach the heart of the Aosta Valley mountains.

In the village, you will see traditional “rascard” buildings, dating back to 1500: wooden structures built on stone supports that hold them above the ground. Don’t miss the hamlets upstream of Champoluc: Mascognaz, Frantze, Crest, Cuneaz, Soussun and Resy, characterised by the architectural style of the Walser, an ancient Germanic people who settled in these valleys in the Middle Ages.

At dinnertime, don’t miss seupa valpellinentze, with fontina cheese, stale bread and Savoy cabbage, a venison stew called “carbonada”, and civet, made from chamois meat macerated for days with juniper, sage and red wine.
