Fontignano

Overview

Located in the vicinity of Lake Trasimeno, on the slopes of a hill halfway between Perugia and Città della Pieve, it probably owes its name to the noble Fontinius family, owners of these lands.

The oldest attestation of its existence is a diploma of Frederick II from 1163 naming theHospital as belonging to the Cathedral of Perugia. In 1188, the Castle of Fontignano came under the rule of Perugia and numerous attempts at rebellion, including that of the famous Braccio Fortebraccio leader in 1415

, were to no avail.

Fontignano is strongly linked to the great painter Pietro Vannucci, known as the Perugino, who frescoed the Church of the Annunziata between 1521 and 1522. He died of the plague while finishing the Nativity fresco and was buried near the church. It was not until 1940 that a monumental marble tomb was created to house his remains.
