Campello Sul Clitunno

Overview

A small green oasis in the Spoleto area

If you are near Spoleto, don’t miss the characteristic village of Campello sul Clitunno. The town is known for its beautiful historical centre, still entirely enclosed by imposing medieval walls, and for its water springs.

The town has two distinct areas: Campello Alto and Campello Basso. The first corresponds to the ancient, fortified village developed around the castle, built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the baron of Burgundy Rovero of Champeaux. It is also home to the Church of San Donato, with its Baroque-style wooden altar, the Town Hall and the Barnabite monastery complex, which houses a fresco by Giotto. In the alleyways of Campello Basso, you can find the 16th-century church of the Madonna della Bianca, with its splendid stone portal.

However, the main attraction of the area is still the stunning Fonti del Clitunno, a natural oasis known since ancient times that has inspired poets and writers of all ages. It is the perfect place for those looking for a break from the daily hustle and bustle and some refreshment from the summer heat. Nearby is the Tempietto del Clitunno, an early Christian sanctuary that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
