Sienese art. From the late Middle Ages to the 20th century from the collections of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena

Overview

If you want to immerse yourself in the heart of one of Italy’s most evocative towns and discover its history, deepest secrets, feelings and art that have always embraced and characterised it, Siena is waiting for you with open doors.

Siena is one of Italy’s most evocative cities, where history and art have always coexisted. In the inspiring atmosphere of Santa Maria della Scala museum, visitors are guided on a discovery of the city’s long-standing love for the figurative arts. In a series of masterpieces from the collections of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the history of Sienese art from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century is told.

A truly unusual collection

Within the walls of this former hospital and hostel for pilgrims, you can now find works by masters such as Pietro Lorenzetti, Tino di Camaino, Stefano di Giovanni known as il Sassetta, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi known as il Sodoma, Domenico Beccafumi, Bernardino Mei, Cesare Maccari and Fulvio Corsini.

The collection, consisting of numerous paintings, sculptures and pieces of miniature, mostly from the Sienese school, is the result of a prolonged historical settlement, which began with the founding of the Foundation in 1472. As one of the largest private collections in Italy, it boasts a selection of works, focusing on the major examples of the Sienese school which, thanks to the great masters of the 14th century, is famous throughout the world.

The exhibition is produced by the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation, the Municipality of Siena and the “Antico Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala” Foundation with the scientific project and organisation by Dr Laura Bonelli from Vernice Progetti Culturali-Impresa Sociale. The exhibition was also created by Opera Laboratori, with a sustainable setup focusing on materials and techniques that minimise its environmental impact.
