Fiesole

Overview

An outline of villas, gardens and farmhouses amidst vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees, and the panorama of Florence. Fiesole, walled by the Etruscans, was occupied by Sulla in 80 B.C., thus assuming the classical connotations of a Roman city. In the Middle Ages, the conflict with Florence ended in 1125 with its complete destruction. In the 15th century, the Medici embellished it with buen retiro buildings, and made it the favourite destination of noble Florentine families. In the following centuries it seduced Boccaccio, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein and Frank Lloyd Wright, and the archaeological excavations of the 19th century gave it international celebrity as the modern city developed.
