Val Gardena

Overview

Enchanted valley between nature and Ladin tradition

Located in the centre of the Dolomites, Val Gardena is home to three main municipalities: Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena.

Ortisei is famous for its mercantile tradition, for being an important skiing centre and its wood carvings. Known throughout Italy, they are synonymous with quality and refinement. Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena are surrounded by the Puez and Cir mountain groups, part of the Sella Group and the Sassolungo Group. They offer mostly year-round hiking and winter sports activities. A characteristic feature of the three localities is the language, Ladin, which is still spoken and taught in schools in the valley.

By stopping at one of the many huts scattered throughout the area, it will be easy to enjoy typical local specialities in Val Gardena. These dishes differ from Italian cuisine in that their origin is linked to the Austro-Hungarian tradition. These include Canederli (dumplings), Gulasch, barley soup, popular throughout the region, and Strudel.
