Overview
An elegant setting and a delight for your palate in the heart of Bergamo
For a tasty break in the heart of Bergamo, visitors with a sweet tooth can’t miss Pasticceria Balzer. Originally founded in 1850 by the Balzer family in Palazzolo sull’Oglio, south of Lago di Iseo, it moved to the historic centre of Bergamo in 1936.
It’s impossible to walk past this elegant artisanal pastry shop when strolling through the Lombard town – Pasticceria Balzer is one of the jewels of the “Sentierone”, a mere stone’s throw from Porta Nuova and the Teatro Gaetano Donizetti. Its proximity to this cultural hub of Bergamo made Pasticceria Balzer a favourite haunt for the likes of Maria Callas, Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio Gassman and led to its growth in popularity.
Now also an ice-cream parlour and bistro, Balzer 1850 was lovingly restored in 2014. Today, it remains true to its history and tradition of producing traditional pastries and cakes such as Torta Donizetti, designed in 1948 by Angelo Balzer, and Polenta e Osei, a sweet reinterpretation of the classic Bergamo dish.
