Passo del Bocco

Overview

For motorbike and bicycle enthusiasts

Bends, slopes and breath-taking landscapes make Bocco Pass one of the most interesting mountain passes in Italy. Over the years, it hosted the Giro d’Italia twice, in 1994 and 2011, and was one of the classic special stages of the Rally della Lanterna.

Between Mezzanego and Giaiette di Borzonasca, it passes through the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri connecting Liguria with Emilia-Romagna. Lago del Bocco, an artificial lake also known as Lago di Giaiette, from the village of the same name is nearby. From above, the basin looks like a three-fingered hand, a peculiar conformation due to the small valleys surrounding it.

Continuing towards Varese Ligure, on the right is a dirt road leading to the slopes of Mount Zatta, where, shrouded in a thick beech forest, stands the imposing building known as the “Colonia Devoto”, now abandoned and a destination for the curious and airsoft enthusiasts of the area.

16 kilometres from the pass, in the municipality of Mezzanego, we recommend the Bosco Giardino: a botanical garden, in Aveto Park, named after Federico Delpino, a famous botanist from Chiavari. The garden, reproducing the typical habitats of the Ligurian Apennines in its flowerbeds, has a 400-metre path that is easily accessible, including for the elderly and disabled, as well as for families with children.
